Losing 60lbs after twins: A Story of Resilience, January 2012
Written by David Nash: Director of Pinnacle Fitness Bootcamp
It’s time for a New Year to begin! With the start of the New Year come our new resolutions. I have been in the fitness industry for over 11 years and as many of us know January is the month where most people decide to shed the pounds and start fresh in their journey towards health.
The beginning of the year is an exciting time, but it’s also a time where you will be tested on your plans that you have set in place. It’s a time where we have to take a look within and see if we have what it takes to make change towards better health.
I recently had the privilege to speak with one my clients Kathy about her fitness transformation. Kathy has been working out with us for over 2.5 years. She joined Pinnacle Fitness Bootcamp in August 2009 about 8 months after the birth of her twin girls. One of the biggest factors for joining our program was the need for a fitness facility that offered childcare. Kathy knew that by having the childcare option she would not have to miss sessions if her husband were unavailable.
When Kathy 1st joined she pushed herself hard. She was not the first crossing the line during the group sprint sets, but that did not stop her from pushing herself. Kathy was determined to do better each session and she did. She lost about 12lbs in her 1st couple of months and started to build muscle. In February 2010, She was down over 20lbs from when she started. During that time she entered in the “Biggest Loser Contest” that we were promoting at our facility. Each contestant worked closely with me and was given information for cleansing the GI tract. We cleansed her body through nutrition and she lost another 8lbs in 6 weeks.
In the summer of 2010 Kathy decided to step it up a notch. Now at the top of the bootcamp class in sprints, core strength, and resistance training, her focus was to get rid of that baby weight once and for all. Kathy told me that she wanted to move her bootcamp classes up to 4 times per week and start running on her off days. She also wanted to change her eating habits. She mentioned that she was going to focus on buying high quality meats, organic vegetables, cut out processed carbohydrates and change from eating white rice to brown. This is when the biggest transformation happened.
In a span of about 10 weeks she dropped close to 25lbs and drastically changed her body fat. I remember every time that she did a body composition analysis she would say, “David do you see this?” I would just smile and celebrate with her. Her numbers reflected her hard work and commitment to her goals that she had set a year prior. Kathy has currently lost over 60lbs and is still setting new goals.
What’s most impressive about Kathy’s story is that through her peaks and plateaus she stuck in there and kept her eyes on her ultimate goal. She learned many things about fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle on her way to shedding those pounds. It did not take 3 months like many people would expect, it took her over a year to get to the point of optimal health.
The two keys that we can take from Kathy’s story are routine and resilience. Many people give up on their health goals right before their breakthrough. My suggestion would be to set a routine, stick to it and set markers to grow in that area of health. Be resilient and true to your routine and eventually you will meet your goals.
